Jive: The Energetic and Fastest Form of Latin Dancing

According to various sources, Jive Dance Ann Arbor was born in Harlem of New York City, others say it was originated by blacks in southern countries of the United States, while it looks something like dance forms of Seminole Indians. Whether it has been copied by blacks from the Seminole Indians or Indians copied this dance from blacks, the truth is that Jive is lively and fastest dance form of Latin dance category. The rhythm and pace of Jive Dancing seems to be influenced from various other dances like Rock, Boogie, and African-American Lindyhop or Swing. In the late 1800s, the South-American blacks were organized a dance competition where winning prize was a cake. Since then, Jive dancing is popularly known as the “Cake Walk”.

Unlike other ballroom dance forms, you don’t have to move around the floor in Jive. Although dancers’ feet look like they are flying in different directions, they remain with knees under the body altogether.  Spinning woman always look like she is enjoying and having lots of fun. Ragtime is the music played with jive dancing. This is known so because participants wear “rags”. Sometimes, syncopation gives irregular feeling with the music.

About Samba
Composed with several dances of South America, Samba dance was originated from Rio Carnival of Brazil and its music creates a party-like atmosphere. Though side steps and walking are the leading moves, Samba is a typical party dance which includes a lot of hip movements with a strong pace.

In the 16th Century, slaves bought their own dances in Portugal and some of them are Rowdy, Stroke and Catarete. As these were danced with close touch of the dancers, Europeans considered these dance forms as sinful. Once declared illegal, Rowdy was then become very populous. Rowdy was danced in the circle’s center with a solo dancer. Along with these dances, carnival-styled dances were also included by the high society members in Rio de Janeiro. Gradually, all these aspects of the dances are combined together and made Salsa we are aware of today.
